- India has large number of drug formulations : 60000 to 85000
- Indian pharma industry thrives on production of cheap generic drugs that are copies of off patent medicines.
- India produces 1/5th of generic medicines globally.
- Such massive consumption could lead to body getting immune to medicnes effect and along with risk of side effects on vital organs
- Total of 963 drugs have been classified as Fixed Dosage Combination (FDC)
- FDC includes 2 or more active pharma ingredients combined in a single dosage form.
- Out of this 963, 344 drugs have been banned with effect from 10th March 2016, valued at Rs.3049 crs.
- If all the 963 drugs were banned, sales would have fallen by Rs.10000 Crs.
- US FDA has banned more than 40 pharma plants in India and issued around 50 warning letters, of which 1/3rd warning letters have been resolved.
- Current size of Indian pharma sales : US $ 18 billion. Currently 85% of API imported from China
- With Make in India flavour and reduced imports, in 2018, size of indian pharma is expected to touch US$ 48 billion
- In 2020, size is expected to be US$ 55 billion
- In 2025, the indian pharma market is expected to grow to RS$100 billion
- Currently 85% of API imported from China
